Smart Ones Dragon Shrimp Lo Mein

Smart Ones Dragon Shrimp Lo Mein

(tender shrimp in a mild soy-garlic sauce paired with Asian noodles tossed with sugar snap peas and carrots)

Directions: Microwave for 3 minutes, stir, cook for 2 minutes more

Mmm…smells good coming out of the microwave. There are 10 shrimp in this “Bistro Selections” dish. The smallest is about the size of a nickel and the largest is about the size of a quarter. The noodles aren’t mushy at all, probably because they are heavier than your average piece of spaghetti.

The sauce is light with touch of ginger and garlic. And more than a touch of salt. 690mg of sodium worth of salt. That’s 29% of your recommended daily value - IF you’re rocking 2000 calories a day. I’m sticking to 1200 calories a day, so if my high school algebra doesn’t fail me, this meal comes to about 48% of MY recommended sodium intake. That’s almost Lunchables territory.

The overwhelming taste of salt in my mouth is the dealbreaker for this meal. It’s not very filling, either. So this dish won’t be seeing the inside of my cart again. I hope that the salad and jello wash the taste away.

Healthy Choice General Tso’s Spicy Chicken

Healthy Choice General Tso\'s Chicken

(Tempura Battered Chicken Breast With Rice & Vegetables In Spicy Brown Sauce)

Directions: Microwave for 3:30 to 4:00. Let stand for 2 minutes, then dump the foodstuffs into the sauce below it. This will be hot hot hot!

I’m still have 3 more dishes in my Cafe Steamers supply, so here we go…

Ni hao! Five pieces of chicken await me. The sauce is spicy and the chicken chunks are a bit too chewy, but all-around it doesn’t taste bad at all. It is VERY spicy, though. The vegetables are peas, carrots and red pepper chunks. There’s also red pepper in the sauce.

Holding true to the Chinese food stereotype, I’m still ravenously hungry after putting away this 430 calories. I steamed up some broccoli to eat on the side.

I won’t do this again. Nothing against the taste of the dish itself, but if I’m going to take a 430 calorie (9 points!!) hit to my day, I’m going to eat real food.

Lean Cuisine Chicken in Peanut Sauce

Lean Cuisine Chicken in Peanut Sauce

(chicken tenderloins & vegetables over whole wheat pasta)

Directions: Cook on 50% power for 7:30 - 8 minutes, let stand in microwave for 1-2 minutes.

Oh, now they’re getting difficult. Fifty percent power? In my household, baby, we operate on FULL POWER or NO power at all! (crushes a beer can on her head)

Ok fine. Fifty percent power it is. Once I figure out how to do that.

I smell peanuts! There are four pieces of chicken in this “SpaCuisine Classic”, some spaghetti, and a lot of peanut sauce about the consistency of turkey gravy. The vegetables are snap peas, carrots, and a single chunk of water chestnut.

Once I got past the initial “Peanut!” taste, the rest of the meal was pretty bland and ‘meh.’ It also tastes saltier than my usual lunchtime fare. I’m not impressed - definitely supplementing this puppy with the garden salad to give my mouth some peppy taste.
